The outdoor plaza at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising (FIDM) was transformed into a Mad Hatter’s Tea Party to celebrate the opening of Disney’s “Alice in Wonderland” costume exhibition in the FIDM Museum & Galleries.
The June 2 event, timed to coincide with the release of the Blu- Ray and DVD debut of the hit film, drew an assortment of fashionistas – several sporting “mad millinery – to view the original costumes designed by two-time Oscar winner Colleen Atwood.
Along with her lavish designs for the film, a collection of six couture gowns designed by FIDM graduates were on the runway for a show emceed by FIDM fashion guru and instructor Nick Verreos. Each of the fanciful creations was inspired by an iconic Wonderland character.
Lewis Carroll would have loved it. The Disney imagineers went over the top to carry out his Wonderland theme with topiary sculptures that included a giant tea-set, mushrooms, the March Hare’s watch and a poison bottle labeled “Drink Me” set about the plaza. The traditional English tea menu consisted of finger sandwiches, Queen of Hearts strawberry tarts and dormouse cookies. The 80-proof, um, tea was served in proper china cups, of course.
This is an ideal outing for your summertime visitors.
Admission to the exhibit is free. It is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday until Sept. 30. FIDM is at 919 S. Grand Ave., downtown Los Angeles
